Genital herpes infects 28 percent of women by age 49

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 28 percent of the world's women will be infected with genital herpes by age 49. According to an October WHO report, women are more likely than men to be infected with the herpes simplex virus that causes the sexually transmitted disease, a fact that experts say may mean that women are more susceptible to the disease. Genital herpes increases a person's risk of contracting HIV, is potentially fatal to the babies of newly infected mothers, and causes distress and anxiety in its sufferers.
