According to new research, teens who take virginity pledges are just as likely to have sex as teens who don't make such promises, and they are less likely to practice safe sex to prevent disease or pregnancy. For the study, a researcher looked at the same data from previous research that had suggested virginity pledgers were more likely to delay having sex than teens who hadn't taken a pledge. By using a different statistical model, the scientist found that when compared to similar teens only, the virginity pledgers were no less likely to engage in sexual behavior, but they were more likely to have sex without condoms or other forms of birth control.
