Herpes drug may help control the AIDS virus

According to a new study, the herpes drug Zovirax may work against HIV in tissues that are infected with the herpes virus. Researchers say their finding, which is published in the journal Cell Host & Microbe, may help explain studies that have shown that people taking Zovirax have lower levels of HIV, while other studies show that taking the drug does not prevent infection with the AIDS virus. The scientists say the herpes virus itself changes the drug into a form that can work against the HIV virus.  Read full story >
