Herpes med does not reduce HIV transmission

According to U.S. researchers, acyclovir, a drug that suppresses herpes simplex virus-2, does not reduce HIV risk when taken by people infected by HIV and herpes. Researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle looked at 3,408 African HIV couples in which one partner had HIV and the other did not. In all the couples, the partner who had HIV also had herpes. The scientists found that there were 41 HIV infections when the infected individual took the herpes drug acyclovir and 43 in patients taking a placebo. This suggests that the drug did not affect HIV transmission rates in people with both conditions. Read full story >
