Researchers say people who use condoms regularly reduce their risk of contracting genital herpes by 30 percent. Previous studies have shown that regular condom use reduces the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. But this is the first study to show a link between condom use and herpes infection. Investigators say condoms only reduce herpes risk by 30 percent because herpes is spread through skin-to-skin contact, and the condom may be unable to cover the area where the virus is shedding at that time.
