Combination of Drugs Blocks HIV Transmission in Mice

According to a new study of mice, the commonly used drug combination found in the medication Truvada may protect people from being infected with the AIDS virus through all major transmission routes. Previous studies had found that Truvada--which combines the drugs tenofovir and emtricitabine--could prevent vaginal transmission of the HIV virus. But this new study found the drug also blocks anal and intravenous transmission of the virus in mice. Scientists caution, however, that there is no guarantee these results will be found in humans, and that controlling the virus with medications brings up a host of other issues, including risky sexual behaviors and unmanageable costs.  Read full story >
