According to a new five-year study, the herpes drug Zovirax (acyclovir) does not reduce a person's risk of contracting the HIV virus. In the study, investigators followed the progress of 3,400 African couples in which only one partner was HIV-positive. Over the course of the study, there were 41 transmissions among couples in which the HIV-positive partner used Zovirax, and 43 HIV transmissions among couples where the HIV-positive partner took a placebo.
