Officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are reporting that as many as one in every six Americans is infected with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). This finding was based on data from the 2005 to 2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. CDC officials say this herpes infection rate--about 17 percent of people in the United States--is the same as a previous survey done from 1999 to 2004.
