Thanks much for your message. I agree single-payer isn't a solution to all U.S. healthcare problems, or even necessarily a good idea. The points you make are valid.
I didn't intend my entry to appear to endorse single-payer. I think most people agree that everybody having essential healthcare coverage is an ideal goal--it's all about how to get there, what it costs, and what the tradeoffs are.
Again, thanks for writing.

Sunday, January 27, 2008 at 02:44 PMThis is absurd and just indicates what a backward country the USA is. A single payer plan is a first step toward socialized medicine which is the m0st effective health policy possible. Amerika is more guided by ultra right wing ideology rather than clear thought as to what is best. Plain and simple, a single payer system costs less. Why do we have to pay off the medical industrial complex and their exorbitant incomes? -

Craig, your snide remarks might get you somewhere in your right wing circle of "liberals" but I consider your effort beneath contempt and ignorant to boot. What is wrong with being in favor of peace and having a realistic policy to acheive it? Have you read Dennis's plan for health care. It is staightfoward and workable. Better than the crap proposed by Hillary.
Single Payer Healthcare: Exit, Stage Left
Dennis Kucinich was not going to become President anyway. We all knew it. He knew it. But with the withdrawal from the race by the peace-supporting, UFO-spotting, impeachment-invoking former Cleveland "boy mayor," there is nobody on the national stage advocating a universal, single-p...

Craig,
You paint the picture as if the single payor system is a panacea. I would like to respectfully disagree with this as all one has to do is look at the flaws in other countries medical systems. One of the many faults on single payor medical systems is the creation of a two-tiered system where the doctors who refuse to accept government payments only accept cash from the wealthiest citizens. Also, there seems to be a feeling that a single payor system would mean every American gets whatever healthcare they want and when they want it. Again, not true. If the government is the single payor they too will not be immune to the problems in rising healthcare costs and one of the many cost control systems will be rationing of care.
