Difference: Obama would provide federal funds for these technology investments. McCain would "encourage" and "support" the use of health IT.

Similarity: Both candidates would attempt to moderate drug prices by permitting imports of cheaper drugs from Canada and elsewhere, and using industry incentives to speed development of generic drugs.

Difference: Obama would permit Medicare to bargain with drug companies on price, driving down the cost the public would pay for drugs. McCain would not.

What's my point? You can find differences, some more significant than others. But you find a lot of similarities too.

If there were an alternate universe--not part of either plan, as far as I can tell--both plans could be put into place simultaneously and results compared. But we'll never really know whose is "better."

Which leads us to this final observation:

Similarity: No matter who is elected, reality will quickly make a mush of these neat little policy plans, resulting in half-measures and middling results.

Difference: None that I can see.
