I had a stroke during surgery to remove a brain tumor

By patti49 Monday, July 28, 2008

I had a stroke back in oct.02.  I had the wheelchair and the whole bit.  The stroke was on my right side and i AM LEFT HANDED, thank god.  I am fine but very inactive and gained 35 lbs.  I go to the y for swim arobics 3 times a week but i miss the really hard core exercising.  I don't even run now.  I feel I just got 25 years older.

Hi Patti,

Thanks for your questions regarding getting back in shape post-stroke.

Some people gain weight due to lack of exercise and increased caloric intake of food, or eating in the same pattern but not exercising as before the stroke. Other stroke survivors lose weight due to lack of appetite post-stroke.

My advice would be to contact your physician regarding an exercise program and diet created especially for you. You may have to build up endurance before you progress to longer exercise sessions. Possibly therapy may be suggested by your physician to build up coordination and control of the stroke-affected side of your body.

Some medications may be the cause of weight gain too. Especially, anti-seizure and or anti-depression medications. However, don't stop taking the medication ordered for your post-stroke recovery. Perhaps gradually building up to longer exercise sessions and varying the routine for a beneficial aerobic workout session in combination with a specific diet plan will help.

Set your goal at five pound intervals. Daily exercise, or increased frequency, may be required to lose weight and assist you in feeling better about yourself post-stroke.

You can do it! Talk with your doctor about your plan of action and then go for it!
