Lipoprotein(a), or lp(a), is the number one most aggressive cause for heart disease and coronary plaque known.   Lp(a) can account for heart attacks in men in their 40s, women in their 50s. Whenever you hear about families in which heart attacks occur in people in their 40s and 50s, always thi...

Dr. Davis states: Vegetarians have higher Lp(a) than meat and fish-eating people.

A more accurate statement would be: Some vegetarians have higher Lp(a) levels . . ." Wink

Studies results are mixed on this issue. All vegetarian diets are not the same and some of the studies comparing fish diets with non-meat/fish diets indicate this fact.

Recent studies at Loma Linda University indicate that a vegetarina diet of unrefinded foods lowers lipoprotein(a). And it significantly lowered it more than a  ominovore diet. (http://www.llu.edu/llu/nutrition/program/present4.html).

Also genotypes along with the type of vegetarian diet make a difference.  For example a study in Korea indicated that the studied vegetarian diet significantly lowered Chol, TG, LDLc, Lp (a) and FBS levels. Significant lipid lowering effect of the vegetarian diet was noted in Apo E allele Epsilon3/4 group which had significantly higher Chol and LDLc levels without diet intervention. (Korean Circ J. 1999 Mar;29(3):266-275.)

The saturated fat statement is also somewhat controversial, but I'll discuss that another time.  Dr. Davis, your article was good though.  Thanks.  Larry
