Have You Forgotten About Iodine?

Many people older than 50 years still remember the days of goiters, enlarged thyroid glands that developed due to iodine deficiency. Up to a third of the population in many parts of the U.S. were affected with goiters, an unsightly bulge in the neck. With goiter comes thyroid dysfunction of a variety...

Dr. Davis,

I just read your article entitled "Have You Forgotten About Iodine?"  Thank you so much, Dr. Davis; for taking the time to submit this article, as I found it most informative.   As you mentioned, it was suggested by my physician several years ago that I reduce my salt in addition to taking medication to reduce my blood pressure; and I did so.  But your article gave rise to me thinking that my doctor really should have given me that information when I was told to reduce my salt intake.  I read an article in a medical publication at that time that Sea Salt was "better" for one to use than regular table salt because the Sea Salt contained minerals that table salt did not; and that as well, Sea Salt would not be contributory to high blood pressure.  The article did not mention anything about Sea Salt lacking iodine, however.  Besides what you've stated about Sea Salt and the iodine factor, are the other things I stated above true about Sea Salt?

At any rate, I had forgotten about Iodine; and other than the Goiter thing, I was unaware of the other potential consequences of too little Iodine in our diets - I found the aspect of weight gain interesting.   I'm going to make sure I take an Iodine supplement - thank you, Dr. Davis!

What about those of us who have had surgery to remove the thyroid completely

but need iodine in their body? How much do we need to take and how will it be

absorbed without the thyroid gland? Thank you, Becky

In testing for iodine levels, we have not seen even ONE American who has adequate iodine stores. Virtually ALL Americans are iodine deficient and suffer from hypothyroidism, poor immune function, poor digestion (adequate stomach acid cannot be made without iodine), increased risk of atrial fibrillation, and increased risk of breast, prostate and thyroid cancer (these tissues are where iodine concentrates and is protective against cancer). The RDI of 140 mcg's/day is just enough to prevent a goiter, but results in severe total body deficiency. No doubt this is one reason why we have so much cancer, hypothyroidism and heart disease.

NO ONE is allergic to iodine. Those who say they are are referring to iodine containing drugs (like dyes used in x-rays), or toxic drugs like amiodarone, which is a nasty liver damaging drug that is used to saturate the heart muscle with iodine. Why not just use plain old SAFE and EFFECTIVE iodine by itself in the form of Iodoral (capsules that can be ordered online) or Lugol's Solution? They contain both iodine and potassium iodide, which are the two forms of iodine the human body needs, and are 100X more potent than the iodine in a multiple V/M or table salt. Any excess iodine one takes in is simply excreted into the urine.....that is in fact how one tests to see if you are taking in enough every day, and in turn will help prevent bladder infections!

Japanese women have the lowest breast cancer rates in the world and men there rarely die of prostate cancer........both eat lots of seaweed and fish products and average about 12 - 13 mg/day of total iodine intake. Americans would improve their health dramatically if they were to dietarily take in a similar amount each day in the form of seaweed, Iodoral or Lugol's Solution. (Kelp tablets do not contain enough iodine unless you take 10 or more/day).

I have successfully converted cardiac patients with atrial fibriallation or flutter back into sinus rhythm with Iodoral or Lugol's Solution. This should be STANDARD therapy for all cardiac arrhythmias.

Topical iodine will also kill all skin cancer cells.......basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Of course iodine is bacteriocidal to 95% of all organisms both internally and externally......that's why surgeons wash their hands with "betadine".......which is just another form of iodine.

Hello thank you for sharing this information.  However I am a bit confused. You say no one is allergic to Iodine. I get hives when I eat shrimp or lobster. I have been avoiding these foods for over 20 years. I have been told I am allergic to Iodine and that these foods contain Iodine. When I have to have a procedure or an xray with contrast ,they tell me I can not have the contrast if it contains Iodine. They give me something else instead. I do use table salt with Iodine (never tgought about it), and Im fine. I would like to increase my Iodine intake or take a supplement so I may reap some of the benefits you spoke about, but I am afraid to take it because of my allergy. How does one know if she is Iodine deficient?  What are your thoughts on this? Thank you in advance for your response.

You say that noone is allergic to iodine but , when you can't get your breath and have to be incobated you tend to believe the people that say you are Not to Use Iodine.

So how do you expect us to get the level and iodine we are suppost to have in our bodies?  I have asked this question so many times and have been on thyroid meds for about 30 years. help ....

For years now I have gotten my iodine in this way:

I bought a bottle and put a little on my thigh.  If it absorbs quickly, you need iodine.  I do this a few times a week.

This might be good for those who do not take a multi-vitamin.

Do a Google search about iodine supplementation or lugol's solution and you will find lots about it. Look for Dr. Abraham especially or the Iodine Project. After being diagnosed with a goiter, I did that and discovered so much information about iodine, and now I take lugol's solution (12.5 mg/5 drops of 2% solution) twice a day by mouth. It doesn't taste good but you get used to it. I also cured many scaly skin spots on my back by applying it several times a day. I don't know if those spots would have become cancerous, but I'm glad they're gone! I also use it for all cuts and sores and they heal with little or no scar.

Hi i have found this very interesting, i have not really used much salt for years now but recently after finishing breast feeding for about 8 years all up(three babies) i thought i should have a good check up as i was feeling super tired, i found out i had high blood pressure, blood tests showed i have over active thyroid and a vitamin D deficiancy, i am wondering if a jolly good bit of salt could really help me with all this. i also find myself wondering if durin my pregnancy i could have been iodine deficiant and if that could have contributed to my little baby boy having a severe allergy to milk and peanut ? just a thought.
