You pretty much find the diet on labels- it's very simple, if it has any sugar or HFCS, wheat - that means white flour as well and anything that is made from that, and look for cornstarch...you don't eat it.

I was at 15 ng/ml (low Vitamin D) and craved food and sweets most days - with only 1 or 2 days that I didn't want food many times per day. So, I would agree that overweight people may be deficient in Vitamin D, except that I'm not overweight at 125 lbps/age 56).  I struggled every one of those days that I craved food and sweets, but I became very disciplined in counting calories and portions to stay thin.  The cravings stopped once I was diagnosed and taking Vitamin D.  My life is much better just because the cravings are gone.  I still manage my calories, but it's easier.  I started with 800-1200 iu, according to my doctor, but now try to get 1000-2000iu per day. A couple of days per month my cravings appear, a female monthly thing. Similarly, I get a craving for food about an hour after eating yogurt with Acidophilis or an Acidophilus pill. Crazy! I tell all my friends about this.

In my above comment, I wasn't clear enough about how being overweight could be linked to Vitamin D deficiency.  My opinion is that if you're deficient in Vitamin D, you probably have cravings for food and sweets, which causes you to eat more food or more often, causing weight gain.  My cravings were there for years and the only reason I wasn't overweight was because I counted calories/controlled my portions.  It was VERY VERY difficult to limit my intake of food and sweets with the cravings.
