I have a brother-in-law, whose doctor put him on Lipitor even though his cholesterol was already low (he gets free prescriptions through his insurance).  It went from total of 120 down to 65.  The doctor said it can't hurt to get it as low as possible.  Can your cholesterol get too low?

tombarbsand,

Thank you for joining our community and submitting a share post.

You ask a good and very interesting question.

Ideally, a person's total cholesterol would be less than 200, that includes HDL or "good" cholesterol, LDL or "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides.

Generally, experts say that HDL cannot be too high and LDL cannot be too low. Reducing LDL and total cholesterol levels, while at the same time boosting HDL levels, can prevent heart attacks and death in all people (with or without heart disease).

It's best to visit a health care professional for a definitive answer. All of the information written above can be found in these links below:

Please let us know what your doctor says about low cholesterol.

The walls of the arteries are protected by the cholesterol... so you dont get gut leak.

Cholesterol levels under 160 are low ... under 120 is unhealthy.  180 is the best per

my doctor.  Remember cholesterol is good.

The liver  produces it to protect you.  BUT,

the food supply and average american diet causes the liver to over produce too much cholesterol... which lead to unhealthy conditions.   JC

I ALSO HAVE LOW CHOLESTEROL. I WENT IN FOR A YEARLY CHECKUP YESTERDAY.  MY CHOLESTEROL HAD DROPPED FROM 136 TO 102.  MY DOCTOR DID NOT ACT ALARMED.  HE ACTUALLY THOUGHT IT WAS AMAZING.  THEN I TALKED TO MY HUSBAND AND HE SAID THAT IT COULD GET TO LOW AND BE TROUBLE FOR ME. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I SHOULD DO.
