Let's not forget the other benefits of a traditional Mediterranean diet: lower incidence of cancer (breast, prostate, uterus, colon), type 2 diabetes, dementia, strokes, and Parkinson's disease.  All leading to longer lifespans.

 

More recent studies point to lower risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and better control of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.
