Seizure medication choices

My husband has had 2 seizures post stroke - the first one was 14 mos after the stroke and the 2nd one was 7 mos after that.   He does not drive.

What kind of changes does a person experience when they are on anti seizure medication - is one medication better than another?   It seems that everything I read conflicts with each other.

Karen,

If you are asking about side-effects of anti-seizure medications they can range from sleepiness to weight gain. Please read the inserts attached to the medication or ask your pharmacist.

It takes a few weeks for anti-seizure drugs to build up a level in the blood stream to be effective so, like all medication take or give only as prescribed, and give it a month to six weeks to work. The changes should be no seizures but if the medication is abruptly stopped seizures could occur.

Your husbands neurologist is possibly trying to come up with the formula of anti-seizure medication that is right for him. Ask the neurologist about the medication and possible side-effects. Write down questions that you would like answered by the physician before attending the scheduled appointmet. Don't be afraid of anti-seizure medications because of potential problems rather than arresting the immediate problems of having seizures.

Thank you for your question.
