For the patient unfortunate enough to have a PFO discovered after a stroke, the size of the PFO and the options need to be discussed with a cardiologist who is experienced in these matters. I often hear that a neurologist suggested such a procedure for various reasons such as prevention of migraines, headaches of other kinds, loss of cognitive function and stroke. Such thinking requires an appropriate second opinion and is not the province of the non specialist.
