Post stroke Mother suffering Seizures but refuses meds

By Karen Friday, December 04, 2009

My Mother had a stroke 20 months ago. She is still unable to walk due to some setbacks, her speech is pretty good but bad at times. She has 2 major seizures this past August. This was very scarry for my family. Our father past last year, and our mother has been very depressed and did not respond well to the seizure meds. She is not taking any at this time. Recently she has been complaining of her head pulsating and feeling not right. She is sometimes confused and forgetful. Her doctors say if she doesn't want to take the tablets there isn't much they can do. We I mean my Sister and I who care for her at home are doing our best to keep watch over her. This is making us very nervouse and tense all the time. Do you have any suggestions. We would really appreciate any advise at this time.

There is nothing you can do if your Mom does not want to take medications.  It really looks like your mom is depressed.  Will she see a therapist?  Maybe a therapist can work with her addressing the depression.  If the depression is addressed she most likely will take medicaiton.   The other thing is to talk to her.  Tell her that her disorder scares you and your sister, and you do not feel like you can care for her if she is having sez?  Maybe a nursing home is the answer?  You might have to be hard on her and say you just can't take the respondsibilty for her, because you would not forgive your self if something happened during the sez?

I wish you luck.  Ask her what she wants to do?  What she would do in if she was in your postion?

Best of luck
