Barack Obama's Grandmother Dies of Cancer

By Laura, Editor Monday, November 03, 2008

Barack Obama's grandmother Madelyn Dunham passed away from cancer on Monday November 3, 2008 in the early morning. She was 86 years old.

In a statement to the press Obama said his grandmother was, "the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances."

While Madelyn's health did not allow her to join her grandson on the campaign trail, she has been a central figure in his presidential campaign. In speeches Obama has frequently referred to his grandmother praising her strengh and calling her a "rock." Last month, as his grandmother's health deteriorated, Obama stepped away from the campaign trail for two days in order to spend time with her.

It's truly a shame that as our nation approaches this historic presidential election, Barack Obama will miss sharing the experience with one of the most influential people in his life. We send our deepest regrets and condolensces to the Obama family.
