We feel empathy for others, yet are able to smile when it comes to our own foibles. Slowly, we re-learn to make the jump from what is considered inappropriate to appropriate humor. For example, when I was sent home from the hospital after having a stroke I could only understand concrete language. The nurse said, "I'll take you down to the discharge area." All I could picture was slime and ooze and I retorted, "No! No! Not discharge!" Even today, when I think of that episode I laugh.
Humor can be found in the most unlikely places and spaces in our lives and it is up to us to re-learn to use it as arsenal in our fight towards healing.
Tell us some of your humorous stories during your stroke recovery. We promise not to laugh AT you but WITH you as you heal.
