Can a person ever go off of a high blood pressure medication?

By ingleside Sunday, September 30, 2007
Hello, My doctor just put me on Benicar 20mg.  I hope to be able to loose about 10-15lbs. through diet & exercise.  My blood pressure has been averaged around 150/90.  All that I have read said that losing weight will bring it down.  If that is the case, is it possible to stop taking medication and see if the weight loss will be able to control it?  I hate being on medication.  I also am 65 yrs old.  My cholesteral is 260 and I have high tryglicerides.  I am hoping that losing weight will bring all of these down. Any input will be helpful.  Thank you.

Only you and your doctor can determine whether or not you're ready to go off medication.

However, we have lots of great resources that you may find helpful as you begin your weight loss program.
