Joan Brooking,   Thanks for your question.  I not quite sure what you are asking - how long is too long?  It sounds like you have symptoms of jaw pain accompanied by shortness of breath, and your physician has appropriately requested a stress test which indicates the possibility of a blockage in the coronary artery.  In addition you have a risk factor of a family history of heart diasease.   The next step is the angiogram which is planned.  Hopefully, if there is a blockage, it can be taken care of at the time of your catheterization.   The next important factor to keep in mind after such a procedure is the necessary changes that have to be made to ensure a healthier future.  In addition to medication that might be required, your diet will have to be closely scruitinized and changed to optimize your health, especially with cutting out fats.  Also, a regular exercise program to keep your heart in the best shape should be discussed with your phsyician, especially the level of activity as well as the timing after your procedure.    Best wishes.  Feel better.   Martin Cane, M.D.
