Q: What could cause chest pain and night sweats in a 7 year old with aortic stenosis?

My son was diagnosed with aortic stenosis in the aortic valve at birth.  He has had 3 heart cath's and has recently started having chest pain with activity.  He went to sleep last night and woke up completly soaked with sweat even his bed was wet.  He has also had apnea and reflux.  Any information would be very helpful.  Thank you!

I am sorry to hear that you and your son have had to deal with this unfortunate situation. First, it is important that you speak with your doctor regarding this event since aortic stenosis, especially in a child, is a very serious condition.

Aortic stenosis can cause chest pain. The reason is that the stenotic valve impedes blood flow through the aorta which is the main artery coming out of the heart. Coming out of the aorta, are the coronary arteries which supply blood to the heart muscle itself. Since the valve is stenotic, or narrowed, the coronary arteries are deprived of flow, and therefore so is the heart muscle. When the muscle does not have enough blood flow, it can cause pain. It becomes more prevalent during exercise since the heart beats harder and faster, and the muscle needs more blood.

Some treatments for aortic stenosis include opening up the valve by using a catheter inserted through peripheral arteries or surgically replacing the valve. Your doctor is the best person to advise you and your son regarding these management options.
