Karen,   Thanks for your question.   Vioxx was a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in a class known as a Cox 2 inhibitor, used in the treatment of both acute and chronic inflammatory conditions.  However, a few years ago, some studies demonstrated a higher than normal incidence of coronary events and strokes among patients taking this drug and it was voluntarily recalled by Merck Pharmaceuticals.  All Cox 2 inhibitors then came under scrutiny and another drug, Bextra (made by Pfizer) was also withdrawn.  Another drug, Celebrex remains on the market, with additional warnings on the label as mandated by the FDA for all Cox 2 inhibitors.  There are one or two other Cox 2 drugs available.   In addition to potential heart risks, all ANSAIDs have a risk of developing GI problems such as ulcers and gastritis.    I suggest you discuss the use of Celebrex and other NSAIDs (that are not Cox 2 inhibitors) with your physician who knows your history and other underlying conditions.  You should discuss the potential risks of each medication and weigh those risks against the benefits that might be achieved.    I hope this has been helpful.   Martin Cane, M.D.
