Q: Please Help to understand my mother's cholesterol test results, it is very confusing

My mother is  65,  Her Total cholesterol level is 6,35 (3.40-5.20)
> Her LDL cholesterol is 2,71 ( norm is shown between 1.63-3.34),
> Her HDL cholesterol is 2.95 ( a norm is shown up to 2.0)

> even though her LDL ( bad cholesterol) is within norm, her doctor thinks
> she should be taking statins, because her Total cholesterol is 6.35 ( norm
> is considered between 3.40 to 5.20).

Seemingly her HDL is high, but isn't it good? HDL is protective cholesterol and in theory the higher the better?>
> SO, what are we looking for in cholesterol test result?
> Why medics do not recognise that in fact it is LDL that we should be
> concentrating on?
> Why is there such thing as UPPER LIMIT to a GOOD Cholesterol? Doesn’t it
> mean that you can overdo on a good stuff?
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->If tHe total cholesterol is high because of the high HDL should not this be considered a good thing? Pls help, I am lost.

Hi Inga,

Here is some information on understanding cholesterol numbers. From the numbers you mention, I gather that your mother's cholesterol was not measured in the United States since cholesterol numbers are different here, but the idea is still the same (you want higher HDLs and lower LDLs, etc). There are also some numbers that were left out of your question.  What was her VLDL level and her cholesterol to HDL ratio?  The links below can explain these and more...

I also encourage you to speak with your mother's doctor about your concerns.

Best of luck,

thanks Monika, indeed she is based in Russia, and her test are done there, I would have to find out about her VLDL etc, will check the links! My natural concern is to avoid statins if she can do without, as I am aware of their side effects, particularly to do with Co Q10 depletion. Her diet is healthy, lots of veg, no animal fats etc, and it looks like her cholesterol issues come from another condition- hypothyroidism.

sincerely
