Q: My husband has had a constant pain under his back shoulder blade.

When he went to the doctors, they gave him an EKG and it was abnormal.    A stress test has been set-up with-in two weeks.  Should we wait that long? Also, is this type of pain a normal symptom of a heart attack?  My husband is turning 70 and in very good physical shape.  However, he can't take any stress what so ever and often has chest pains related to stress.

The typical signs and symptoms of heart attack is chest pain, often with accompanying shortness of breath and sweating.  Less commonly other complaints, including upper back pain can signal a problem.  There are also some other types of serious cardiovascular disease that can present with complaints of sudden onset of back pain, such as dissecting aortic aneurysm, which is a tear of the main blood vessel going away from the heart.  Since the EKG was abnormal and especially if your husband is still experiencing symptoms, consider going to an emergency room sooner.
