Q: I can't find the name for the condition where one would have thrombophletbitis when no injury

I have thrombophlebitis but I have had no injury. I can't remember the name of the condition that my doctor told me. I have hard lumps that bruise a week later and are extremely painful, and again I have had no trauma or injury.

Sarah,

Thanks for your question.  Sorry to hear that you're having problems with blood clots.  I think the term you are looking for is "hypercoagulable state".  This means that you have the tendency to form clots more readily, and more often in situations that most people would not clot.

This could be a genetic problem, or could be due to an underlying medical problem .  Also, medication can sometimes be a cause, such as hormonal therapy.

Your doctors need to do a thorough evaluation of your blood, as well as checking you out for any underlying problems.  I'm sure they have reviewed your medication.  Also ask your family about anyone in the past that might have had similar problems.

The good news is that there are several different types of medication that can be used to minimize the occurrence of these clots.  Which medication will depend on the findings of your evaluation.

Best wishes.
