Tuesday, November 08, 2011 israel ayala asks

Q: mom stroke, week ago, cant swallow, has tube through her nose, has no other apparent damage, is weak and has part of her face swollen, around eye, her throat is swollen, will she recover dysphagia?

I wish to know if after, what appears to have been a minor stroke, one can recover from dysphagia or is this a permanent effect, she can talk, but her voice is strange from a swollen throat, she vomited much before, so she damaged throat, swollen throat seems not to be related to stroke, however dysphagia seems to be, does this sound like she will recover from this? she is very drowsy and has trouble with balance too, all I would like to know is, statistically speaking, is this swallowing problem a temporary consequence or not?

Hi israel ayala,

I'm sorry to hear about your mom's stroke.  Everyones recovery from stroke is individualized and dependant on many factors.  Talk to her doctor about your concerns and for his opinion on what her recovery may entail.  Ask if an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist can be done to assess the cause of her dysphagia and what therapy might be helpful in treating the dysphagia.  Here is a link to Stroke Recovery information that you may find helpful.
