Tuesday, April 12, 2011 Cindy asks

Q: I am allergic to sulpha drugs. I also have strong sulfer water smell in my water at home.

Could I be allergic to the water as well?  I moved into this house about a year ago, and have been experiencing upper respiratory infections constantly since moving here.  I have had every indoor and outdoor allergy test available with no positive results.  Is there a link between supha and sulfer?

Hi Cindy,

Sulfa allergy involves a sensitivity to a particular class of antibiotics containing sulfonamides, such as Bactrim, Septra and Pediazole....this is different than sulfur.  I suggest that you ask a pharmacist your specific question just to be sure, but I do not think that they are closely related (even though their names are similar).
