Q: My husband had a severe pain in his back and had trouble breathing. What could cause this?

My husband had a very severe pain in his back (I think about the middle) that lasted a few minutes and stated afterward that he could barely talk and was having trouble breathing.  He is 46 yrs old.  We were told by a family member that this could be a sign of a heart attack?  Is that accurate?  What else could this be?

Hi osupipes,

Your family is correct; it could be a symptom of a heart attack.  Other things that come to mind are pneumonia, blood clots in the lungs, or even a pulled muscle in his back.  The only way to know for sure is to see his physician.  I encourage you to do this as soon as possible just in case it was a heart attack.
