Q: Brain Stem Stroke (from aneurysm surgery) Severe pain in back of head/neck for over a year!

On Sept. 28th, 2010, my son, 44, had an aneurysm coiled and in the recovery room suffered a small brain stem stroke leaving him paralyzed on his left side.  He was recovering, they took him off of Plavix 80 day post op and he suffered a massive brain stem stroke.  He was on life support, had a feeding tube put in, a tek was also done.  After weeks in ICU, a speciality hospital and a month in rehab, he is learing to walk again and starting to function.  My question:  Starting immediately after the first stroke, he has suffered with a 8 to 9 level of pain where the stint was put in and down around his neck and up into the back of his head. The neuroligist doubled is Gabapentin to 600 mg, 3 times a day, and the pain went down to a 5 or 6.  I took his to a Pain Clinic, they proceeded to inject the site with morphin, steroids and lantican? That landed him in the ER with a "whole new level of pain".  I thought maybe someone would have an idea.

Hi Tricia,

What a terrible experience your son has had to live with this past year. I do not have a new suggestion for you, just want to encourage you not to give up and continue asking questions. There is nothing wrong with seeking second opinions (or third, fourth, etc.) until you find a doctor that is able to provide a solution that works.

All the best,

Trica,

I'm so sorry for what has happened to your son. But I myself suffered a massive stem stroke back in Nov 2005. It was found by accident that the pain reliever oxycodone works in such a way in my body that with this medication I can walk, talk, drive a vehicle and do all of the normal things that most people do.

I do not know why this works for me but it does, without the medication I get to a point that it is very hard for me to put simple sentences together and I will have the physical feeling of being intoxicated, which by the way is a feeling I detest.

I don't know if something like this might help your brother but at this point like I said what do I have to loose. I have found that after years of being on this medication I  have had one doctor who did not agree with the use of this medication, because a person does become dependent on it. But I myself would rather be able to be active and I only hope and pray for your brother that he has a doctor that would at least try this and maybe it will help.
