Q: What is shortness of breath? I sometimes feel I need to take a deep breath but can't.

I have had a tickling or itching sense in the middle of my chest, very light, between the breasts for a couple weeks.  I can't tell if it is a topical or an interior sensation.  Today I was having trouble getting deep breaths.  Then I did a LOT of yawning.  Are these heart problem symptoms?  I have had the trouble getting deep breaths before related to anxiety.

Jan,

Shortness of breath occurs when a person is breathing fast and deeper than normal and has the sensation that they are not getting enough air into their lungs or system.  It is usually a continuous feeling.  This problem is usually associated with lung and/or heart problems like asthma, pneumonia, congestive heart failure where the lung tissues fill with extra fluid which blocks air from getting into the lung tissue, and blood clots which block blood vessels and oxygen can't enter the blood.  There are a few other situations.  All of these situations can be sorted out by your doctor with questions and a good physical examination.  Sometimes further tests like an EKG and/or chest X-Ray helps establish a diagnosis, and sometimes more specific testing is required.

The situation you described sounds like the need to sigh (take a deep breath) from time to time.  As you mentioned, this is a common symptom with people who have some anxiety issues.  But you should know, many patients with anxiety can also have shortness of breath.  And this sensation could represent an underlying lung problem.

I suggest you make an appointment with your physician to rule out the more serious problems and help establish a diagnosis.  If your heart and lungs check out OK and anxiety is the issure, then you should discuss treatment with your doctor to make you feel more comfortable.  Many drugs used today are non-narcotic with little side effects.  In most cases, they can be discontinued when symptoms have been eliminated for several months.

Best wishes.
