could I have had a mini stroke?

Topics:Mini Stroke

The first of November I had a weakness in my legs that was so strong I had too sit down.  This passed in a few minutes, but I was a little weak all day.  This had happened to me 2 or 3 times before about 6 to 9 months before but it was in the middle of the night when I had gotten up to use the bathroom and passed quickly.  Could this have been a "mini stroke"?

Hello Diana,

Thanks for your question.

You related that you had weakness in your "legs". If it was both legs it may not be a symptom of stroke as stroke, or TIA's mini-strokes the forerunner of stroke, usually affect one side of the body.

But this is NOT to say you are fine given the little information I am going on. You should definately have it checked by your physician. It could be low blood pressure, it could be low glucose levels, it could be a lot of things and it could be nothing to worry about as well.

Sometimes when we're laying down for a while and get up, like you did to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, our blood pressure changes and can make us a bit dizzy or light headed for a moment. This could lead to weakness in your legs too.

Stroke symptoms are painless and do occur suddenly but usually affect just one side of the body. Heart disease and stroke are very similiar as they both affect the circulatory system.

If symptoms are occuring that you're not sure what they're caused from get it checked out by your physician, a cardiologist or neurologist.
