Q: Is the feeling of heavy legs a possible indicator of heart problems?

When I walk about 20 to 30 yards my hips get a tight and binding feeling. A few moments later (2to 3 min.) my legs start to fell very heavy and stiff making it quite difficult to walk. Could this be what I hear called PDA?

Hi Jackson77,

This could be a sign of circulatory issues. I recommend contacting your physician to be evaluated.

All the best,

It's seems serious to me - see a doc and get evaluated. FYI- I experienced "heavy legs" after walking a longer time while on blood pressure medication - seemed to be a reaction to the med.  It was a scary situation each time it happened.  I also had strange discomfort at the back of my legs, behind knees - have veins showing there afterwards.  My cardiologist and her physician assistant gave me the impression that my story about all this was unbelievable or unrelated. Very disappointing - how they handled it - advice to see my general practitioner!!

Via that cardiologist I had a DVT test and one for peripheral artery disease - nothing showed up .  The "heaviness" in the legs incidents happened on 3 occasions before I quit the medication.  I've not had the same situation since and walk on the treadmill without any issue.  I do have high blood pressure and have tried 5-6 different meds, all causing problems.  While I didn't get help from my doctor , I believe that most doctors would respond differently.  I probably need to find a new one!

I have ann updated view of the situation, since I saw my gynecologist yesterday.  I've had the heaviness in legs with walking, but have also noticed some pain in area where leg meets groin area. This pain doesn't happen always at same time of leg heaviness.   The gynecologist suggested that I ask my general doctor about an inguinal or femoral hernia, which could put pressure on or strangulate the major artery to leg(s).  I'm not going to be walking on treadmill until I see doctor in a couple of weeks.
