Sunday, September 27, 2009 Mr Dave asks

Q: Exercise induced heart trouble above 80%. Will I do damage or make heart stronger?

I have been told by my heart Dr that I have Exercise Induced heart trouble. It was explained to me that when my heart rate goes above 80% the nerves on either side of my heart that contract to cause the pulse are slightly out of sync. I don't get the full pump of oxygenated blood to my system so I have trouble breathing. My question is ; I regularly exercise (Bike ride) at 90- 100% heart rate. Am I making my heart stronger or am I doing damage?

Hi Mr. Dave:  it sounds like you are describing Atrial Fibrillation.

See my blog posts, I have a number of blogs on this topic.

Generally, exercise will not hurt the condition you have.  It might make your heart race or go faster, but this can generally be treated with medications.

Ask you doctor about his.
