Friday, February 20, 2009 Jonny asks

Q: i am 31 I weigh 300 pounds and my resting heart rate is around 115 on average should I be concerned

I have been trying to get back into the gym to lose this weight but right away my heart rate goes to 130 and in little time after that it can get up to 150-160 working out strong on the bike.  I can't maintain that level for more than a minute.  I want to know if I am in danger of a heart attack, should I take it slower, my cardio only lasts around thirty minutes right now but I wish desperately to lose this weight without dying trying.  Any suggestions would be great.  Oh and my blood pressure is almost always completely normal.

Hi Jonny,

 

I agree with the above input.  You need to seek medical clearance before beginning an exercise program.  Due to your obesity and medical history, there may be extra precautions you need to take while increasing your activity level.

 

The fact that you are taking steps to lose weight and improve your health is great.  Stick with it!

 

A normal resting heart rate for an adult is between 60-100 beats per minute.  Discuss your elevated resting heart rate with your MD.

 

Your target heart rate when working out is 50-70% your maximum heart rate.  Your max heart rate is 189.  So, you want to keep your beats per minute between 95-132.

 

At 150-160 beats per minute you're working out at 79-88% your max heart rate.  I recommend slowing down to keep your heart rate within the desirable range, but first consult your MD.

You should definitely see a doctor before you start a new workout regimen.  Your resting heart rate is high which is another reason why you should see a doctor soon.  When working cardio, start off slow (walking, slow cycling).  Diet is an extremely important factor when maintaining heart health as well and will help with your weight loss too.
