Tuesday, July 29, 2008 glnols asks

Q: Shakiness all over and feel heart beats as though they are hitting somethiing,

In 2003 was given clean bill of health for cardiology.  Had everything up to and including cardiac catherization.  In last few weeks, noticed that I can feel/sense/ the heart beating kind of a thunping .

I have been noticing that I am out of breathe when I shouldn't be (climbing steps, walking).  I am feeling a sense of shakiness which shows itself in both hands. Sense of balance has been affected also.  Also feels like acid reflux and have been using Priolsec and Tums which help some,

Was in sleep study last night and they said the ekg looked fine, but that they had only 2 electrodes.

Hello ginois,

Though 2003 seems not that long ago, what a difference 5 years can make to your heart's health!

You should return to your cardiologist with these complaints as soon as possible. Depending on what other diseases you suffer from and the specific nature of your symptoms (when they occur, what makes the better/worse, how long they last, etc), these complaints could represent that your heart is not receiving enough blood and that you are at risk for a heart attack.

The symptoms especially concerning to me are your shortness of breath with activity and sensation of palpitations, especially if you have have risk factors for heart disease (like blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol) that are not being well controlled. Here is a link to our community's risk factors for heart disease website.

Though it is possible that your symptoms have a less serious cause, it is worthwhile to discuss them with your doctor.  And certainly, if your shortness of breath doesn't stop after your activity, or you have chest pain, pains shooting to your arms, or to your jaw, you should go to your local ER immediately.

To your health,

Neil MD
