How do I loose weight when I'm on antidepressants, like Zoloft and Welbutrin?
Hi Annabo,
The recommended plan to lose weight on antidepressants does not change. Here are some guidelines for choosing a plan that will lead to lasting results.
1 Step at a Time
When it comes to weight loss it's best to take one step at a time for slow and steady results. You want long term lasting weight loss, not a quick fix. Quick fixes usually result in immediate weight loss followed by gaining it back along with a few extra pounds you didn't start with. I would set a realistic goal of 1-2 pounds per week.
Be Active
If you are not physically active, you need to start. It can be a simple brisk walk if you want. Weight loss requires you to eat a healthy diet and be physically active. Shoot for at least 30 minutes 5 days a week. If you can fit in 60 minutes 5 days a week that's even better.
Well-Balanced Diet
Next, assess your diet and where you can make improvements. Once you identify your problem areas pick one or two to correct, such as if you drink 2% milk, start by switching to 1% or skim. Are you eating lunch out 4 out of 7 days a week? Figure out a way you can start taking a healthy lunch with you. Continue down the list until you've replaced unhealthy eating habits with a healthy alternative.
Consider adding omega 3 fatty acids to your daily diet. Omega 3's are linked to improved heart health and decreased depression.
All the best,

Lose Weight the Healthy Way
I found the different antideperssants had different effects on weight. When I was on zoloft I gained 40 lbs and was never able to lose it while I stayed on zoloft. Wellbutrin did not effect my weight adversly. I was able to lose the 40 lbs I had gaind on zoloft by dieting. After I lost that weight, my weight varied with my eating habits.
