Q: My 10 year old had an abnormal ecg again yesterday. What do these things mean?

The 12 lead ecg printout indicated the following: possible atrial arrhythmia, A-rate 165, and borderline left axis deviation.  He had scarlet fever 6 years ago with a temp spike of 105.6 and 2 years later began having heart problems.  We were told a mild case of rheumatic heart disease but nothing to be overly concerned with.  What does this ecg mean for a 10 year old?

Hi Rhonda,

I encourage you to speak with your son's pediatrician or a pediatric cardiologist about the meaning of the ecg, the future prognosis and possible treatment options. Here is some general info about rheumatic heart disease that can help answer some questions.

Rheumatic heart disease

Best of luck,
