Q: heart disease

I have been having chest pains, I was told it was panic attacks. I had a stress test done at age 36, and the tech. told me there was nothing wrong with me except I was in piss poor shape. Went to my family doctor and she said the results showed my left ventical was slightly enlarged probably do to my high blood pressure. Two years ago I had chest pain but this time it was very intence, went up my left jaw, broke out in a sweat and was very tired. Went to hospital and was told nothing was wrong. I have now started pushing the issue, I am 48, still have chest pains, it feels like someone is squeezing my chest and it goes into my jaw, when it eases off I am tired. I had a stree test done last month and failed. While on the tread mill my chest began to hurt and this pain I never felt before and I got light headed. The next day I went for a Heart Cath and it came back clean. While in the middle of the Heart Cath it felt like my heart was turning flipp flopps. When I asked why it was doing that the Tech. told me it was skipping a beat or two. Went in to my Heart Doctor to get my results and he said my Arteries were clean and my heart looks good. He said he had no idea why I was told I had an enlarged left ventical. I tried to show him some reports on womens heart disease and he blew me off. He said he would see me in a year. Since then I had two accounts of chest pains the same systoms but now it hurts in my back between my shoulder blades. I am very concerned about this, there are times when I am woken up by chest pains and there are times when they happen when I am just sitting doing nothing and there are times when I would be doing an activity and it occures. I have poor circulation in my fingers and toes and legs. I had an Doppler Ultra Sound done on my legs and it showed I had some blockage but not bad enough to do surgery. Would this cause my chest to hurt? My father passed away age 47 with hardening of the arteries, my mother had an enlarged heart, and my brother was told his arteries were clean and a year later he was found dead do to what they said was a heavy heart. Can someone tell me if I have something to worry about and where to go from here?

Hi Teresa,

I agree that you should continue investigating the cause of your symptoms, especially with your family history. Unfortunately, I don't have a quick solution. It's a matter of continuing to seek second opinions until you find a physician willing to work with you to investigate the situation. You may have more luck with a doctor practicing functional medicine. If you do a Google search for "Find a functional medicine doctor" the Institute for Functional Medicine should be pulled up. That may be a good place to start.

All the best,
