Sunday, October 25, 2009 blueyes asks

Q: I have been taking 1200mcg of Nascent Iodine 3 times a day and have a TSH 5.3 ulU/ml that

has just been tested in my blood test. My doctor says I am destroying my Thyroid and I should stop taking it. I read here that 5.3 means I need to take more, is that a correct interpetation of what I read? Is there another cause for a high TSH?

Hi Blueyes,

 

The normal reference range for thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is 0.5 - 5.0.  TSH levels greater than 5.0 indicate potential hypothyroidism.  I recommend working with your physician to determine an appropriate treatment plan.  Here are two link you may wish to review:
