Moderate alcohol intake (7-13 drinks per week) has been shown to have a favorable effect on heart disease, actually lowering the risk of developing a heart attack.  A relatively recent report seems to indicate that even after bypass surgery there may be a benefit to moderate drinking.  In addition, a different study suggested that those who stopped drinking moderately after a heart attack also were at increased risk, compared to those who continued drinking.  So start slow, but if you are already 1-2 weeks post surgery it is probably okay to enjoy wine with your dinner.
