Thursday, December 03, 2009 conserned wife asks

Q: what about the effects of alcohol on the heart etc

My husband has  what you have called  "stable angina".  He plays golf quite often. He is not fat. But his colesterol was measured at around 7.  He complains of pains around the heart when we argue or when he feels extream emotion. He drinks every day. does not smoke. eats lots of good food (salad is included in his diet) I worry about the quantity of alcohol that he consumes. I see you do not add this as a risk on your list?  Two years ago he had a full medical which showed him to be very healthy except for his colesterol.

Please advise what I can do to help.

thanks

Hi Concerned Wife,

Maybe I can give you some insight about heart disease. First, cholerterol alone is not a problem. The problems arise when cholestrol turns to glue and clogs up the arteries. That's why staten drugs are so widely prescribed to "reduce" cholestrol, but do absolutely nothing to get at the cause for cholestrol thickening. Then they prescribe a blood thinner which again does nothing except fix the problem short term.

The exercise your husband gets playing golf and the alcohol he consumes may have a beneficial effect, believe it or not. The alcohol relaxes the blood vessels and allows better blood flow. That's the good part. Drinking alcohol every day is not healthy and causes problems with the liver and is actually harmful in the long term.

If your husband wants to add years to his life (so he can keep playing golf) and life to his years, he will have to make some changes. Usually, men don't make any changes until they are forced to. I hope your husband is smarter than that. Ask him to take a look at this website: www.GreatHealth-Tour.com/mfarris. And don't forget about your health, heart disease is the #1 killer of women too.

Be Blessed,

Mike
