Q: cholesterol measurements

My Dr. says my cholesterol level is 5.6, my HDL 1.5 and LDL 5 point something. These numbers don't relate to your figure of 40 or 50 or 60mg. How do I compare?

Hi Robin,

You need to convert from mmol/liter to mg/dl.  I've done the conversion for you below.

Total Cholesterol 5.6 mmol/liter = 218.4 mg/dl

HDL 1.5 mmol/liter = 58.5 mg/dl

LDL 5.? mmol/liter = ~195 mg/dl (I'm guessing your memory of this number isn't accurate.  Whatever the number is, multiply by 39 to convert.)

All the best,

Lisa Nelson RD
