The numbness also runs down my arm to my elbow. What can cause this?

Many times my right hand has a tingling numb feeling. This seems to happen all the time when I exercise on a elipitcal machine. My thumb seems to numb the worse. When I let go of my grip and lower my arm the numbs disapates. It also happens sometimes while I am using the computer such as right now. What gives ??
