Q: I have been given a clean bill of health, but suffer from chest pain that radiates to arms and wrists both sides. taking astma meds as perscribed but not working really. Could it be anything else?

I went to the er with chest pressure and pain. They did blood pressure checks which was a little high, Chest x-ray and ekg...showed no signs of heart attack. Lab work showed all good. Was diagnosed with alergies and asthma. I have been taking advair and singular for three weeks and am almost done with the perscriptions for both. The symptoms lessened but never went away completely. I also have albuterol inhaler which doesn't seem to work. I woke up this morning at 2 am with the pressure. Which grew increasingly painful despite taking meds. The pressure begins in the throat, then the chest tightens pain radiates into sholders and down through wrists. It hurts more to sit still then to walk in out. It occurs every fifteen minutes or so for a few hours then stops. I do seem to be affected by pine pollen level or medium high currently with a windy night. My question is....If meds are not really helping could this be something else?

Hi Pollyanna,

It's difficult for me to say what may be the cause of your symptoms. There is nothing wrong with seeking a second (or multiple) opinions until you find a physician able to shed in sight into your situation.

All the best,
