Q: Having concerns about chest pain post-surgery for WPW

I am a 21 year-old male who has been living with Wolfe-Parkinson-White since I was about 16.  This was all assumed, but could not be verified since it nothing ever showed up on tests.  Last March while on vacation in the Rockies I experienced several episodes resulting in blacking out and heart rates up to 300 bpm.  At that time I was flown back to Boston for an ablation.  During the procedure it was discovered that I had AFib as well as WPW, however only the bypass tract was treated.

The surgery ended, I recovered, and returned to college.

Sometime this summer I started experiencing acute pain in my chest, my doctors equipped me with a king of hearts monitor and after a month the tests showed no information.  An attempt at an MRI was made, but the iodine caused my heart rate to increase and blurred the photographs.  At the end of the summer the pain subsided.

Just about 3 weeks ago during my 21st birthday I began to have tachycardia again and began to become nonresponsive as a result, all i can remember was extreme pain throughout my left chest.  Since that day the pain has turned to a harsh soreness that has lingered and makes even lying down to sleep a painful activity.

Could this be a reoccurrence of my WPW, and the pain is from the surgery?  Or is this something completely different.

Hi dpra20,

I'm sorry to hear you are in so much chronic pain. Whether it is the WPW coming back to haunt you or pain from your previous surgery or something else completely, you should defiantely see your cardiologist or at least your primary care physician about this pain immediately.

Best of luck,

Hi dpra20,

At age 21 you should not be experiencing these conditions. I recommend you get a second opinion from Dr. Harry Elwardt. Learn how to take charge of your health... you'll live longer.
