Q: Terrible pain in chest that feels as if I have something caught in there.

I have a pain that I get every now and then. I have mentioned to my GP. He says it probably is Arthritis.

I have had the stress test and other chest x-rays. I believe that he may also think it has something to do with my depression. I am on several meds which are mainly for Migraines but also for depression.

I have had head pain since a small child. I can remember at about the age of 7 walking home from school I would get sick. The head pain was always there. My mom would just call it th 24 hour flu. I would sleep in the bathroom because I was vomiting and heaving for a good 8-12 hours.

As a teen I went to  a doctor who said it was my nerves so he put me on meds. I really wasn't on them too long because I just stopped taking them at about age 17 when I was living on my own. Back then there really wasn't much in sick days from work. I do remember getting sick at work and many times just making it home in time to the bathroom.

I would get worse with the head pain always if I got overheated and with my two pregnancys.  I con'td to tell each doctor of the head pain. Seems that all they had back then was nerve medicine.

I could not take over the counter meds. I would always get sick with in minutes after I swallowed them. So, off to the bathroom I would go.

Not until 15 years or so was I diagnosed with migraines. My doctor at that time had me try several different meds. The pain pills that I took did help some. After awhile my doc suggested that I also see a neurologist. That is when I started my migraine therapy about 9 years ago.

I am now on Inderal, topamax, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Wellbutrin to help me with the pain. I have been on topa for probably going on 7 years. I am on 400mg. I still have migraines. A few years back I started experiencing the worst pain in the back of my neck that would work its way up the back of the head and trigger the most painful migraine.

Back to topa which like I said helped with the pain. My migraines now are not daily. Also, the pain that I do get is usually aborted with an Imitrex injection.  Before topa when I did Imitrex it would be anywhere up to 2 hours before it would help. Now it is about 15 minutes. I had challenges with the s/e that were so intensified. I still deal with cognitive problems pretty much chronic now.

So, ther eis some history.

This pain that I get every once in awhile was almost too much to handle the other day.It usually is right in the center of my chest (between the breast). This last episode just seemed to last so much longer than before. What it feelslike is if you swollowed something and it is just caught there. I try to get it moved/stopped by drinking water and pepcid.

The pain can cause me to double over. This time though the pain, seemed to me, be at its highest ever.It would start to get lighter a few times but then up it would go. When I had it the othr day it was early afternoon and I had not eaten anything yet so knew it was not food caught. After an hour or so it finally stopped.

So, does this help any so that you might have a thought to what is causing all this pain?

If anyone else has any thoughts about this condition I sure would appreciate yur input.

Thanks so much everyone. This is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your question.  Your migraine history is very impressive, and I hope you obtain better relief in the future.  As for your chest discomfort, I assume from your question, that your physician performed the stress test to rule out heart disease as a cause for your present pain.

Another area to consider is the digestive system.  Gallbladder disease is notorious for causing discomfort in the chest that is often mistaken for heart disease.  Many people can get sharp pain, dull ache, nausea and vomiting, feeling of fullness or bloating, as well as chest discomfort.  Your description certainly could be caused by the Gallbladder.

Stomach disorders are another possible etiology.  These include gastritis, ulcer, growths, and hiatal hernia (a pouch of stomach that sits above the diaphragm).

Esophageal problems such as reflux, inflammation, and blockage by a food bolus, muscle spasm, or growth, are also on the list of possibilities.

I think it's time to broaden the search a bit and consider other causes.  I suggest another appointment with your doctor for a re-evaluation.  Please discuss these possibilities with him.  He might request further blood work as well as other studies to investigate your complaints.  Remember, these are just possibilities.  Your physician might have a different impression after taking a history and examining you.

Best wishes.

Im no expert but i'd get checked for a Hyatial hernia it a hernia up high around your chest area. Not sure,I have 1 myself but no one ever said anything about it or if it should be fixed or anything else, but that's the VA system at it's finest in my case
