Q: HOW MUCH ALCOHOL CAN YOU DRINK IF YOU ARE TAKING A STATIN DRUG?

MY HUSBAND IS TAKING LOVASTATIN 10MG AND 2 FISH OIL TABLETS DAILY.

HOW MUCH ALCOHOL CAN HE HAVE DAILY WITHOUT HAVING A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON HIS LIVER.

Hi Carrie West,

 

The general rule of thumb is to avoid alcohol when taking statins because of the possible damage that can occur to the liver (of which it appears you are aware). Literature indicates that your husband will probably be okay with as much as 2-3 beers/drinks per day (moderate amount for a man) but this may not be the case.  No one will know for sure how much alcohol and statin drugs his liver can metabolize without damage until liver tests are done and disease is either ruled out or diagnosed.

 

It's always best to be a little more cautious and drink 0-1 a day.
